Concept Testing Methods: Monadic, Sequential Monadic and Proto-Monadic

A good idea can still fail if customers find it confusing, irrelevant or difficult to believe. Concept testing helps you find those problems before investing heavily in product development, packaging, advertising or a new website. It puts an early idea in front of your target audience, measures their response and explores what should change before launch.

But how you show the concepts matters. The three common approaches are:

  • Monadic testing

  • Sequential Monadic testing

  • Proto-Monadic testing

Each offers a different balance between research quality, sample size, speed and cost.

What is concept testing?

Concept testing is the process of collecting customer feedback on an idea before it is fully developed or launched. You can test:

  • Product and feature ideas

  • Packaging designs

  • Value propositions

  • Brand positioning

  • Advertising concepts

  • Claims and messages

  • Landing pages

  • Names and visual identities

A concept test should help answer a practical business question: which direction should we develop, and what should we improve before moving forward? It should not simply identify the concept with the highest score. A useful test also explains why customers responded as they did.

1. Monadic concept testing

In a Monadic test, each respondent evaluates only one concept. For example, if you are testing three packaging designs, you divide your sample into three groups. Each group sees one design and answers the same evaluation questions:

  • Group 1 evaluates Concept A

  • Group 2 evaluates Concept B

  • Group 3 evaluates Concept C

Advantages of Monadic testing

  • Each concept is evaluated independently.

  • Respondents are not influenced by competing ideas.

  • The questionnaire remains short and focused.

  • It works well for complex or significantly different concepts.

  • It provides a clean measure of whether an idea performs well on its own.

Disadvantages of Monadic testing

  • Every concept requires a separate respondent group.

  • You need a larger sample or a larger customer database.

  • Respondents cannot directly explain why they prefer one idea over another.

2. Sequential Monadic concept testing

In a Sequential Monadic test, each respondent evaluates several concepts, one at a time. A respondent might review Packaging A, answer a short set of questions and then repeat the same process for Packaging B. The concept order should be randomised or rotated. This prevents one design from always benefiting from being shown first.

Advantages of Sequential Monadic testing

  • The same respondents evaluate multiple concepts.

  • It usually requires a smaller total sample than a Monadic design.

  • Results can be collected faster.

  • Every concept still receives an individual evaluation.

  • It works well for brands with limited customer databases.

Disadvantages of Sequential Monadic testing

  • Earlier concepts can influence reactions to later ones.

  • Respondents may become tired if too many concepts are shown.

  • Repeating the same questions can feel monotonous.

  • The survey can become too long.

  • Randomisation is required to manage order effects.

Sequential Monadic testing is especially useful when comparing two or three relatively similar concepts. Because the same group evaluates multiple options, it can reduce total sample requirements while preserving concept-level scores. For many brand decisions, it offers the most practical balance between confidence, speed and cost.

3. Proto-Monadic concept testing

A Proto-Monadic test combines individual concept evaluation with a final comparison. Respondents first review and score concepts individually. At the end, they see the alternatives together and select the one they prefer.

Advantages of Proto-Monadic testing

  • Measures how each concept performs individually.

  • Produces a clear final preference.

  • Shows whether the highest-rated concept is also the preferred option.

  • Helps identify the trade-offs customers make.

  • Works well when the business ultimately needs to select one winner.

Disadvantages of Proto-Monadic testing

  • It takes longer than a simple Monadic test.

  • The final comparison can influence how results are interpreted.

  • The questionnaire and analysis are more complex.

  • Respondents may choose the best of the options even when none is particularly strong.

Proto-Monadic testing is commonly described as a combination of individual concept evaluation and comparative testing.

Which concept testing method should you use?

There is no single best method for every project.

  • Choose Monadic testing when you need a clean evaluation of each idea and have enough respondents to create separate groups.

  • Choose Sequential Monadic testing when you are comparing two or three concepts, have a limited audience and need results quickly.

  • Choose Proto-Monadic testing when you want both individual concept evaluations and a final head-to-head choice.

For many companies, a lightweight Proto-Monadic test is the most practical approach. Respondents evaluate two or three concepts individually, one at a time, before comparing them directly and selecting a preferred option. This structure makes efficient use of a limited customer database while providing both consistent scores for every concept and a clear final preference between the alternatives.

The key is to keep the study short. Showing too many concepts or asking too many repeated rating questions can create fatigue and reduce the quality of the feedback.

1. Show the concept

3. Probe the respondent’s own words

5. Compare the options

After evaluating every concept individually, respondents see the alternatives together and choose their preferred direction. A final open question explains the decision: Why do you prefer this concept? This produces both structured comparison data and customers’ own reasons for choosing one idea over another.
