The local business directory. A local.ch search for "etude de marche" in Sion returns an insurance consultancy and a tax law firm. No research institute.
Direct search, both languages. French and German searches across Sion, Sierre, Martigny, Monthey, Brig and Visp surfaced no Valais-domiciled research institute.
Two organizations in the canton do research-adjacent work: the Observatoire Valaisan du Tourisme in Sierre, which is an academic and cantonal body rather than an agency you can hire, and Keran Sarl in Sion, a communication and strategy agency that lists market research among a wide service range.
And a warning that is the real reason this article exists: several online listings of "top market research agencies in Sion" name agencies that are not in Valais at all. The one ranking first is in canton Vaud. Details below.

What Does Exist in Valais
Two organizations in the canton are worth knowing about. Neither is a market research institute, and being clear about what each one is will save you a wasted phone call.
Observatoire Valaisan du Tourisme (Tourobs) — Sierre
Tourobs sits within the Institute of Tourism at HES-SO Valais-Wallis in Sierre. It was launched as a cantonal initiative in late 2009, with implementation entrusted to the HES-SO Valais/Wallis Institute of Tourism in late 2011.
Its work is applied tourism research: accommodation statistics, visitor demographics, market trends, destination benchmarking, visitor satisfaction surveys and sectoral reports. For anyone in hospitality, mountain resorts, destination management or transport in Valais, this is a genuinely valuable body of published data, and it is data about your market specifically.
What it is not: an agency you can brief. It is an academic and cantonally funded observatory. Its output serves the tourism sector and public policy. You can read and cite its publications. You should not expect to commission a brand tracker from it.
Keran Sarl — Sion
Keran is on Rue Pré Fleuri in Sion, 1950, and it is the closest thing to a research offer based in the canton capital. It is a marketing strategy and communication agency. Market research appears on its site as one element of long-term client support, alongside strategy, web and SEO, paid campaigns, social media, public relations, events and CMO-as-a-service.
That framing is the important part. There is no stated panel and no published research methodology. If you are already working with Keran on strategy and you need market input to inform it, that is a natural fit. If your requirement is a methodologically rigorous study that has to withstand scrutiny, from a board, a regulator or an investor, this is a different kind of service and you should look to a Vaud or Geneva institute.
A note on what we excluded
At least one Sion-based agency that appears in search results for market research does not mention research anywhere on its own website. It is a digital marketing and automation agency. We have not listed it, because listing a company under a service it does not claim to offer is how these directories become useless in the first place.
Warning: The "Top Agencies in Sion" Listings Are Wrong
This is the part worth reading twice, because it will cost you time otherwise.
Search for a market research institute in Sion and you will get results. Several pages confidently list "the best market research agencies in Sion" or "institut d'études de marché Sion" with names, descriptions and rankings. The names are real companies. The location is not.
The clearest example
The agency that ranks first for market research institute in Sion is Elyos Etudes de Marché. Elyos is a real, verifiable agency, founded in 2011, and by its own positioning a good fit for SMEs and startups. It is registered on Route de Cossonay in Prilly, canton Vaud, in the Lausanne agglomeration. That is roughly 100 kilometers from Sion, in a different canton, on the other side of the lake basin.
Nothing about this is Elyos's fault. It has never claimed to be in Valais. The error lives in the aggregator pages and AI-generated listicles that infer a location from search demand rather than from an address, then copy each other.
Why this keeps happening
Directory and listicle pages are generated against a keyword, not against a canton. When a query like "market research Sion" has demand but no local supply, the ranking algorithm fills the gap with the nearest relevant result, and the page presents it as if it were local. A second generation of pages then cites the first. After a few rounds, an agency has a Valais presence that never existed.
The same mechanism produced a claim we also checked and rejected. Search results assert that a Geneva consultancy covers Valais. That claim does not appear anywhere on the company's own website, so we have not repeated it.
How to check in ten seconds
Open the agency's own website, not the directory page listing it.
Find the legal notice, imprint or contact page. Read the postal address and the postal code.
Valais postal codes start with 19 and 39. If you see 1008, 1005, 1200 or 8000, the agency is in Vaud, Geneva or Zurich.
If the address only appears in a directory and never on the company's own site, treat it as unconfirmed.
This is not an argument against hiring those agencies. Several are excellent, and a Vaud institute is a perfectly sensible choice for a Valais company. It is an argument against believing you have found a local supplier when you have not, because that belief shapes what you expect on price, on travel and on turnaround.
The Realistic Options for a Valais Company
Hire from Vaud
The Lausanne region is the nearest real concentration of research capability, one to two hours from most of the canton. It holds the oldest institute in French-speaking Switzerland, a regional consumer panel, a sensory specialist and an agency that explicitly targets SMEs and first-time research buyers.

Use the cantonal data that already exists
If you are in tourism or hospitality, check what the Observatoire Valaisan du Tourisme has already published before commissioning anything. Free existing data on your own market beats a paid study that reproduces it.
Or stop treating proximity as a requirement
The reason "no agency in Valais" mattered a great deal in 2010 and matters much less now is that research stopped being a physical activity.
