Qualtrics Alternative in 2026: 7 Platforms Compared

Matthieu Saussaye

Start here: SmartInterview
SmartInterview runs the interview itself. You describe what you need to learn; the questionnaire is written for you, respondents are recruited, and every open answer is transcribed, coded and counted. What normally takes three weeks of fieldwork and a week of analysis lands as a filterable dashboard in a couple of days.
The difference that matters on this page: most tools on the list collect answers. SmartInterview also asks the follow-up question. When someone writes "the onboarding was confusing", the AI asks what exactly confused them, in their language, before moving on. That is the sentence you were looking for, and no multiple-choice grid will ever produce it.
Why people leave Qualtrics
Qualtrics is not a bad product. It is an enterprise product, and that is the whole problem for most teams who look for an alternative. Three reasons come back constantly.
Price and commitment. Qualtrics is sold as an annual contract, negotiated, with a floor that rarely sits under five figures. If you run four studies a year, you are paying for a platform that idles most of the time.
Time to first result. The survey builder is deep, and depth costs setup. Teams report days, not hours, between "we need to ask something" and "the link is live" — especially once logic, quotas and translations are involved.
Analysis you still have to do. Text iQ helps, but open answers still need a human pass to be trustworthy. The promise of automatic themes rarely survives contact with real verbatims in three languages.
The 7 alternatives at a glance
1. SmartInterview — AI interviews with automatic follow-ups, coding and a live dashboard. Best when the answer matters more than the count. Pay per completed interview, no annual contract.
2. Typeform — the nicest respondent experience on the market. Weak on quotas, panels and serious analysis. Good for feedback forms, not for research.
3. SurveyMonkey — the default. Cheap, familiar, and enough for a satisfaction survey. Its panel is expensive per complete and its open-text analysis is thin.
4. Alchemer — the closest thing to Qualtrics without the contract. Complex logic, decent API, steeper learning curve than it looks.
5. Forsta (Confirmit) — built for agencies running tracker studies. Powerful, priced accordingly, overkill for a product team.
6. Qualtrics CoreXM (entry tier) — worth naming: if you only need the survey engine, the entry tier is far cheaper than the suite you were quoted.
7. Google Forms — free, and honest about what it is. Use it for internal logistics, never for a study you will present to a board.
How to choose, in three questions
Do you need a panel, or do you have your own list? If you have the emails, most of the price difference disappears and you should optimise for the builder and the analysis. If you need respondents, compare cost per complete, not licence price. If you need a panel, our list of Pollfish alternatives compares the main respondent platforms.
How much of your question is open? A satisfaction tracker with nine rating scales and one comment box is well served by almost anything. A study that hangs on "why" needs follow-up questions, and that narrows the field fast.
Who will read the result? If the answer is "the board, next Tuesday", the deliverable matters more than the feature list. A dashboard someone else can filter beats a CSV you have to pivot.
Where I draw the line between AI-led and human research
I let the AI run the interview from end to end. It writes the first draft of the questionnaire from my brief, asks the follow-up when someone says the onboarding was confusing, in their language, transcribes and translates, codes at sentence level, and builds a dashboard I can filter within hours.
I still set the business question and success metrics, pick the sample and quotas, lock wording for trackers, and read verbatims in every key segment before I trust a theme. I decide what remains comparable with past Qualtrics waves and I require a human pass on multilingual coding before anything reaches a board. What goes wrong when the line is crossed: teams ship AI themes or change wording during a migration, the trend breaks, and a phantom problem drives the roadmap.

Before you migrate
Export your existing questionnaires as QSF before the contract lapses — you will not get them back afterwards. Keep the wording identical when you rebuild, or you break comparability with your own history. And run one wave in parallel if the study is a tracker: a change of platform is a change of measurement, and you want to know its size.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest Qualtrics alternative?
Google Forms is free and SurveyMonkey starts around 30 CHF a month, but neither includes respondents. Once you need a panel, compare cost per completed interview instead of the monthly licence — that is where the real difference sits.
Can I import my Qualtrics surveys?
Most platforms accept a QSF export for structure, but logic and quotas rarely survive the trip. Plan to rebuild the routing by hand and to re-test it before launch.
Is an AI interview as reliable as a classic survey?
For closed questions the two are identical — same scales, same quotas. The difference is on open questions, where a follow-up produces roughly four times more usable text per respondent than a single free-text box.
