SmartInterview vs SurveyMonkey vs Pollfish: which tool for customer insight?

Matthieu Saussaye

Why the choice matters
Traditional survey tools often rely on long, static questionnaires and manual analysis. Panel platforms solve reach, but leave you with the same shallow open-ends. SmartInterview combines the simplicity of a modern survey tool with AI-powered customer interviews that help teams validate ideas quickly, test messaging and understand customer feedback in more depth.

How to choose
Pick SurveyMonkey when you need a long, highly structured questionnaire and you already have an audience to send it to. Pick Pollfish when reach is the problem and you mainly need closed questions answered fast by a consumer panel. Pick SmartInterview when the answer you need is a why rather than a how many, and you would otherwise be reading hundreds of one-line open-ends by hand. In practice the three are not mutually exclusive: several teams run SmartInterview for the qualitative phase and keep a classic tool for large tracking studies.
Where I draw the line between AI-led and human research
I let SmartInterview’s AI run the conversational interviews: screening, adaptive probing, transcript cleanup, theme extraction, contradictions, and a first-cut summary with quotes. I also let it suggest follow-up questions mid-field to chase a signal. I keep humans in charge of research design, defining hypotheses, edge-case QA of transcripts, and the final narrative that connects insights to product or messaging. When I need a long, highly structured questionnaire, I still build it in SurveyMonkey. When reach is the bottleneck, I use Pollfish or a similar panel but I review quotas and exclusions myself.
What goes wrong when the line is crossed: teams let AI auto probe without guardrails, it nudges respondents, then they read a beautiful summary of biased answers and kill a good idea based on synthetic consensus.
